For many children TikTok is the first app they want, and also the one parents worry about most: endless videos, strangers in the messages, and content that was not made for children. The good news is that you can block or limit it without taking the phone away every day.
1. Block TikTok on the phone itself
This is the strongest option, because it works everywhere: at home, at school and on mobile data.
- Android: go to Settings → Network & internet → Private DNS and enter a filter address. With Die Ratel every phone gets its own address, and you choose in the conversation which apps are blocked for that child.
- iPhone or iPad: install a DNS profile. Die Ratel makes one for each device; you download it in Safari and install it under Settings → General → VPN & Device Management.
Tip: lock the setting with the phone’s own parental controls (Google Family Link or Apple’s Screen Time), so your child cannot switch it off themselves.
2. Block TikTok for the whole house on the router
One setting on the Wi-Fi router protects every device in the house: phones, tablets, computers and even the smart TV. It is easy, but remember that it only applies on the home Wi-Fi. If your child switches to mobile data, only the setting on the phone itself helps.
3. Only in the evenings
Many parents do not want to ban TikTok completely, but want it to rest at night. With a schedule, TikTok works during the day and is blocked from, say, 20:00 to 06:00. The same works for Snapchat, Instagram, games or the whole internet.
What Die Ratel does differently
Die Ratel sets all of this up through a conversation, in Afrikaans or English: you say “block TikTok for Pieter after 20:00”, and it happens. There is no app to install on every phone, and you can see for yourself what is blocked. You can try it free for 7 days, no card needed.
