Android: Private DNS
Android 9 and newer can send all DNS lookups over an encrypted connection to a hostname you choose. It works on Wi-Fi and mobile data, with no app.
Hostnames
| Filter | Private DNS hostname |
|---|---|
| Family Filter | family.cloudflare-dns.com |
| Adult Filter | family.cloudflare-dns.com |
Adult and Family currently share a hostname. A Die Ratel hostname with the full Family rules is coming with our own resolver network.
Steps
- Open Settings → Network & internet → Private DNS (on Samsung: Settings → Connections → More connection settings → Private DNS).
- Choose Private DNS provider hostname.
- Type the hostname from the table and tap Save.
Lock it for a child's phone
- Use Google Family Link to manage the device; a supervised child account cannot change network settings without the parent's approval.
- On Samsung, Settings → Digital Wellbeing → Parental controls offers the same lock.
- Also disable "Use secure DNS" in Chrome's Settings → Privacy and security → Use secure DNS, or set it to a Die Ratel DoH endpoint.
