For many children YouTube is today’s television: good educational videos, but also plenty that was not meant for their eyes. Fortunately you do not have to choose between everything and nothing.
Choose what fits your child’s age
- Younger than about 9: allow only YouTube Kids, and block the normal YouTube.
- 9 to 13: normal YouTube with Restricted Mode (moderate or strict). It hides adult videos and comments.
- Teenagers: Restricted Mode, or YouTube only at certain times.
- Bedtime: YouTube rests at night, with a schedule.
Why a DNS filter works better than the setting in the app
Restricted Mode can be switched on and off in the YouTube app, and children know it. A DNS filter enforces it on the device: whatever setting your child chooses, YouTube shows the restricted version. The same filter also enforces SafeSearch on Google, Bing and DuckDuckGo, so search results do not show inappropriate images.
How to set it up
- Choose whether you want it for the whole house (the router) or per child (on the device).
- Choose per child: YouTube allowed, restricted (moderate), strict, or blocked.
- Set a schedule for the evenings if you want.
With Die Ratel you simply say in the conversation “make YouTube strict for Danielle”, and it happens on all her devices. The first 7 days are free, no card needed.
